Safe Riding Checklist

The four habits every teen and parent should memorize — plus a pre-ride check you can run in 30 seconds.

The 4 non-negotiables on the road

  • Come to a full stop before every turn.

Rolling turns are the #1 cause of teen e-bike crashes at intersections. Feet off the pedals, look both ways, then go.

  • Ride WITH traffic — never against it.

Ride on the right side, in the same direction as cars. Drivers turning right or pulling out of driveways aren't looking for someone coming the wrong way.

  • Use hand signals every single time.

Left arm out for a left turn. Left arm up (or right arm out) for a right turn. Left arm down for stopping. Signal 3 seconds before you act.

  • Stay 3 feet away from the Door Zone.

A parked car door can swing open in 1 second. Getting 'doored' at 20+ MPH throws you into traffic. Ride at least one door-length (3 ft) away from any parked car.

30-second pre-ride check

Run through this list before you push off. Parents — check it with your teen the first week they ride.

  • Helmet on, straps in the 2-V-1 position
  • Both ears completely uncovered — no headphones
  • Tires firm, brakes squeeze cleanly, lights work
  • Battery charged, motor cuts off correctly
  • Phone in pocket — NOT mounted where you'll stare at it
  • Bright or reflective clothing, especially at dusk

California quick-reference for riders under 18

  • Helmets are required by law for all riders under 18 on any class of e-bike.
  • Class 3 (28 MPH) e-bikes require a rider age of 16 or older.
  • Stay off sidewalks in Fremont's business districts — use the bike lane or street.
  • Follow every stop sign, red light, and yield sign. E-bikes are vehicles.
